Around the World in 30 Days!

Update Oct. 18: You have two more weeks to send in your art. Scroll down to the bottom to see some of the other entries!

This month, you're challenged to take a piece from your gallery and redo it in an art style from a different country's artistic tradition. When you finish your piece, submit it to dA and link to it on our journal. We'll be featuring the art in this journal as it comes in - if you put the old and new piece side-by-side, you can also send it into our Before and After gallery. You can do more than one, if you have the time.

At the end of the month, we'll create a map showing off all the places we've been, artistically. Let's see how much of the globe we can cover!

For bonus bragging rights:

  • Celebrate Halloween this month by having one piece relate to the holiday
  • Slip this challenge in a couple of your Inktober images
  • Pick an unusual country
  • Draw while wiggling your ears

Rules:

  • Don't just do an art style from your own country. Instead, explore! Push outside your comfort zone!
  • Don't take the easy route and do usual suspects (realism, impressionism, manga, cartoons, etc). I see those memes all the time. YOU CAN, HOWEVER, be inspired by a specific movement or time period that includes one of those. For example, you could do something in the style of the golden era of comics in the US or a piece inspired by the Swedish Halmstad group, which used cubism and surrealism. The idea is to research and discover new things about art. Don't take the easy way out!

Questions you might have:

Q: Do I have to only re-do old pieces from my gallery? I want to make new ones! And I have only 2 pieces in my gallery right now...
A: No, it's not a hard and fast rule. There may be many reasons you'd want to do a brand new piece for this challenge (especially if you're doing many). But remakes are cool and show improvement, nudge, nudge.

Q: So you're saying we shouldn't do the most obvious styles (like manga or realism). But what if I make them specific to a place and time? Like what if I do Russian Realism and put a bear drinking vodka and a ton of snow in my picture? Can I do it then?
A: Yikes, no need to get the poor bear drunk, but yes. If you do (for example) realism inspired by the traditions of Russia specifically, that'll count. As long as you use a specific movement within an art style, you're good.

Q: Wait, I don't really know much about another country's art. Should I just make stuff up?
A: Just look it up and see what you can dig up online. And don't just base your picture off the first hit on google Images. Learn a little about what made the style appear and why people drew the way they did. That way, you won't be merely copying the art that's already out there. You'll be able to use the ideas behind the style and make it yours.

Q: I really really like Japanese art. Can I do four pictures using different Japanese styles from different periods (say, Yamato-e, Kyoto school, Ukiyo-e, and Superflat) and count them as four country entries to this challenge?
A: That sounds like a really cool idea! I would love to see it and you should totally do it...but it would only count as one country - Japan.

Q: Do I need to put something in the comments section of my deviation?
A: You don't have to, but a link to the group and/or link to the challange is always welcome and will help explain the reason for your piece and get more people involved. Oh and I love hearing about what you did and why in the piece's comment box. I know I'm eager to learn about art styles of different countries.

Q: Will there be point awards? I like points.
A: The art is its own reward! There might be a few participation points here and there, but we do these challenges for the fun (and the bragging rights!). For points (and to enter a monthly point raffle), you can do corrections to art pieces in the "correct me" gallery folders (unrelated to this challenge).

So. There's just one question left to ask...are you in?

Life changed a bit since I said I would join, and the craziness is making it hard to keep up with everything, so I'll not be able to enter in time. However, I'll still be doing the three I planned in my own time, and I'll do them as a Before and After~:aww:
Sorry for being unable to follow though on my words~:thanks:
